Why Cyber Crime The Game?

Cybercrime. A frightening problem in today's digital world. The numbers in the Netherlands regarding cyber crime are even worse. But what is cybercrime? What forms are there? And what can you do against cybercrime? In this blog we take you into the world of cybercrime, read who we are and why Cyber Crime The Game was developed.

What is cybercrime?

Cyber crime, also known as cyber crime and computer crime, is a broad term for illegal activities aimed at compromising the security of digital systems and stealing valuable information. This ranges from hacking to identity theft and from phishing to ransomware. In short, any criminal activity carried out through computers and the Internet.

Many times, cybercriminals are technically savvy and use sophisticated methods to bypass security systems. As a result, not only individuals are attacked (think young and old), but also companies and even governments. Result: significant financial losses and damage to (company) reputation.

Unfortunately, cybercrime goes a step further. For example, cybercriminals are masters of manipulation. The more credible the story, the more likely an opening will be created. In other words: social engineering. This can take place via the Internet (emails, whatsapp, etc.) and telephone.

Social engineering

Deception. Manipulation. Human hacking. Whatever term you want to attach to this, cybercriminals do everything they can to deceive people. On the one hand to obtain valuable information, on the other to gain access.

Cybercriminals can use information they find online for this purpose, such as information on social media. Let's use two examples to outline how a cybercriminal might operate:

  • By phone: the bank calls. There is a problem with your account. To solve this problem, it is necessary to log into your account together. In reality, this phone call comes from a cybercriminal in order to steal money from you.
  • Online: an email arrives in the mailbox. The mail looks familiar and asks you to click on a link. In reality, the email is from a cybercriminal trying to install malware on your computer and/or trick you into stealing personal information.

Therefore, it is important to always be careful and verify who you are asking for information or access, both online and offline. Remember; if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The importance of cybersecurity

So we need protection against cybercrime: cybersecurity. In other words, protecting computers, servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks and data from digital attacks.

From installing antivirus software and updating systems regularly to educating users on safe online habits. A robust cybersecurity policy is essential to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of information.

Awareness and awareness against cybercrime

Cybercrime is a global problem that requires a coordinated response. By working together and investing in cybersecurity, we are moving step by step closer to a secure digital world.

This means not only that companies and governments need to strengthen their cybersecurity, but also that individuals need to be aware of the risks of digital attacks and how individuals can protect themselves online. After all, humans are often the weakest link when it comes to creating (unconscious) openings to data or systems. To reduce the likelihood of just any opening being created through individuals, awareness must be created.

Your wake up call for cyber awareness

Cyber Crime The Game. A "wake up call" to start creating awareness and consciousness about cyber crime among individuals. What to look out for when phishing, what is CEO fraud and how does ransomware work? Several questions that were answered after playing this game with the players.

Why "Your wake up call?" We go beyond just playing a game. Repetition of content is crucial to keep the material alive and up-to-date. We provide a strong foundation. Want more advice after that? A reference book with security tips? Cyber Crime The Game provides a strong line of defense against cybercrime!

Gamification and Cyber Crime
